FAQs

General product questions:

Do Purple Prairie products contain synthetic fragrances or artificial colors?
We use only pure plant derived essential oils and extracts which give our products their beautiful aromas. Most of our products have no added color. Some of the soaps are colored with spices, clay and natural mineral oxides just for fun.

Do your products contain parabens or other chemical preservatives?
No, we have never used chemicals to give our products an endless shelf life. Mother nature provides excellent natural alternatives including rosemary extract.

Do Purple Prairie products irritate sensitive skin?
We cater to sensitive skin! It's one of the most important reasons why we are in business today and the ingredients we use reflect that. As with any skin care product, test it on a small area first.

Are Purple Prairie products safe for children and pregnant women?
Our skincare products are safe for children. Women that are pregnant can use most of our products with confidence but should educate themselves about which essential oils to avoid. Some essentials to avoid when pregnant include peppermint, rosemary, cinnamon and clove.

Do you test on animals?
We are in compliance with Leaping Bunny and the PETA statement of assurance. We do not test on animals and do not purchase materials from any company who tests on animals.

Are Purple Prairie products gluten free?
Yes. We use Certified Gluten Free Oatmeal in our artisan soaps

Are Purple Prairie products certified organic?
Although we use certified organic ingredients when possible, the finished products do not carry an organic seal yet. However, our products meet and exceed organic standards and will reflect this when we complete the organic certification procedure.

How do I store my products and what is the shelf life?
Purple Prairie products will be good approximately 36 months from open date when stored at room temperature and out of direct sunlight. It is best to avoid exposing products to extreme heat or cold.

Are the essential oils in the products therapeutic grade?
Yes and many are also organic.

Does the Palm oil you use in your soaps come from sustainable sources?

We proudly use organic, sustainable palm oil. This palm oil is QAI-certified organic, sourced from Colombia, and holds USDA, NOP, RSPO, and the well respected Rainforest Alliance certifications.  The palm oil industry faces major objections due to its production impact on wildlife, specifically orangutans in Borneo and Sumatra.  We are intentional about the country of origin of our palm oil and source product from countries where the orangutan is not native.

Which products can help eczema and psoriasis?
We have received regular feedback from customers that our products give relief from the symptoms of eczema, psoriasis and other skin conditions. However some products stand out more than others including: healing body balm, body butter, gardener's salve, and oatmeal soaps. Our products are not medicines or drugs, they are natural remedies that support and unite with your body’s ability to heal itself.

What is your best product for dry skin?
All of them!

How do I use the essential oils?
When mixing essential oils in a carrier oil, I recommend starting with a ratio of 1:10. This translates to about 20 drops essential oil per ounce of carrier oil. Use a high quality organic carrier oil such as olive, jojoba, sunflower or coconut. There are many other exotic oils available online as well or check your local co-op.
The mixed oils have endless uses. I personally use them for the medicinal powers and to help me sleep. My personal favorites are lavender, ylangylang, patchouli, eucalyptus, tea tree, rosemary and ravensara.
Its a good idea to educate yourself about the individual benefits of each oil online or with a good book.

My product looks different this time than the last time I bought it. Why?
Because we use only natural ingredients, the end result can vary slightly from one batch to another but almost never noticable. Normal variance in sunshine, rain, or temperature from year to year or harvest time can all subtly affect natural ingredients. One year’s pressing of Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil may be greener in color than another’s, or you may experience a stronger or subtler scent with an essential oil. These are all normal and to be expected with natural ingredients, and do not effect the quality or efficacy of the product.
